Employees News
MATERNITY CHANGES
Women whose expected date of giving birth is on or after 1 April 2007 will be entitled to new rights from 1 April 2007, including:
- greater entitlement to statutory maternity pay.
- the right to do some work while on maternity leave without losing their right to Statutory Maternity Pay.
Those returning to work early will have to give eight weeks notice (rather than 28 days), and employers can make 'reasonable contact with women on maternity leave without facing potential claims for constructive dismissal or sex discrimination.

MINIMUM WAGE INCREASE
On the 1st October 2008, the national minimum wage will increase. The new hourly rates are:
£5.72 for those aged over 22; £4.77 for 18-21 year olds; £3.53 for 16-17 year olds.

AGE DISCRIMINATION
On 1st October 2006 new laws came into force prohibiting age discrimination in the workforce. As when laws relating to sex, race and disability discrimination were introduced, there is likely to be a substantial culture shock as employers and managers are required to modify their behaviour or face compensation claims in tribunals.

INCREASE IN SICK AND MATERNITY PAY
Statutory Maternity Pay increases to £117.18 per week from 6 April 2008 (from £112.75), and Statutory Sick Pay to £75.40 (from £72.55).
